NEW ZEALAND PROJECT
Commerce Street Auckland CBD Edge Protection Project
Modular temporary edge protection for a fast-moving high-rise construction project in one of Auckland CBD's most confined working environments.
The Commerce Street project combined a restricted inner-city footprint with a rapid full-footprint jumpform construction sequence. APAC provided a compact and reusable temporary edge protection solution designed to move with changing work areas while reducing dependence on limited site lifting resources.
PROJECT CHALLENGE
Edge Protection in an Extremely Confined Auckland CBD Site
On a dense inner-city project, temporary edge protection has to compete for the same limited space, access and lifting resources as the main structural works.Three Constraints Shaped the Requirement
- Extremely Confined Site: A small CBD footprint, busy shared working areas and limited space for storage, loading, lifting and site movement created significant logistical constraints.
- Fast High-Rise Construction Cycle: The full-footprint jumpform system progressed rapidly through the structure, so temporary protection needed to keep pace with changing work areas.
- Limited Lifting Resources: Tower-crane capacity was prioritised for structural construction, meaning temporary protection needed to minimise its dependence on heavy lifting.
APAC SOLUTION
A Compact Modular System That Could Move With the Structure
APAC provided a modular temporary edge protection system suited to the restricted logistics and fast vertical construction sequence of the project.
Reduce the Burden on a Congested Site
Compact modular components helped reduce equipment congestion within an already restricted working area. Man-handleable components also reduced the need to depend on tower-crane capacity for every installation and relocation activity. As the jumpform and active construction levels progressed vertically, the temporary protection could be removed, transferred and reused in new work areas.
COMPACT
Less Site Congestion
Modular components reduced the amount of space required for handling and temporary protection equipment in confined work areas.
FAST
Quick to Relocate
The system could move with the changing vertical construction sequence instead of remaining fixed to one work area.
MAN-HANDLEABLE
Less Crane Dependent
Components that could be handled without heavy lifting helped preserve crane capacity for critical structural construction activities.
REUSABLE
Standardized System
The same temporary protection components could be redeployed across different floors and work areas as construction progressed.
HIGH-RISE APPLICATION
Temporary Protection That Follows the Vertical Construction Cycle
On a fast-moving high-rise project, the value of a temporary edge protection system is not limited to the first installation. It also needs to remain practical as the active work zone moves upward through the structure.Install, Relocate and Reuse
The standardized modular approach allowed temporary protection to be redeployed instead of relying on newly fabricated barriers every time the work area changed. This was particularly useful alongside the project's jumpform construction sequence, where temporary work areas progressed rapidly through successive levels. For a restricted CBD project, reducing additional fabrication, storage and lifting requirements also helped simplify site logistics.- Follow changing construction levels
- Reuse the same system across suitable work areas
- Reduce unnecessary site-fabricated temporary barriers
- Preserve lifting resources for structural works
Site Logistics Are Part of Edge Protection Selection
On high-rise projects with restricted storage and lifting capacity, system weight, component size, handling method and relocation requirements can be as important as the initial fixing arrangement.

FAQ
Commerce Street Auckland Project FAQs
What was the main challenge on the Commerce Street project?
The project combined a very restricted Auckland CBD footprint with rapidly changing high-rise work areas and limited lifting capacity, creating demanding logistics for temporary edge protection. Why was a modular edge protection system useful?
Modular components could be installed, removed and redeployed as the construction sequence progressed instead of requiring a new site-fabricated barrier arrangement for each work area. How did the system help reduce crane dependence?
Man-handleable components reduced the need to use heavy lifting resources for every edge protection installation and relocation activity, helping preserve tower-crane capacity for structural work. Why is compact equipment important on a CBD construction site?
Restricted inner-city projects often have limited space for storage, loading and site movement. Compact modular components can help reduce additional congestion in shared working areas. Can the same edge protection system be reused on different floors?
A modular temporary system can be redeployed across suitable areas as construction progresses, subject to the fixing condition, structure and protection requirements at each location.Planning Edge Protection for a Confined High-Rise Project?
Send us your structural drawings, site layout, construction sequence or lifting restrictions. APAC can review the application and discuss a modular temporary edge protection configuration for your project.
